Hostname curiousity

Its been a long time since I've worked with Linux so bear with me.
Using Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 LTS when I set it up and give it a host name it seems to append the letter "a" onto the name when resoving it through DNS via another machine.
I changed the etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf file from using <hostname> to the explicit text. I'm wondering if its a bug or a feature, or something to do with Microsoft's dns not playing nice.
Any observations or solutions would be appreciated.
