Ladies and gents, the majority, if not all major blockbuster rendering is done using linux APPLIANCES. Why ? because if all i want to do is render terabytes of data it makes sense to add the minimal userland and rendering specific tools above the linux kernel and dedicate all my serverfarms power to the one task i need. No need for an entire OS. This is not some design win for desktop linux, it's just sound technical business.

Server linux rendered the movie. Desktop linux can't play the game. I do not feel warm inside.

XSi, Maya, anything made by AutoDesk.

Probably Autodesk Smoke. It requires RHEL, actually is distributed with a custom version with a custom kernel Smoke won't run without.
