Can anyone help?
I am having the same problem. I also have access to the internet but I am running the Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 on Sun's Virtual Box. I have no idea what the problem is. I am not new to Ubuntu but is not an OS that I use all the time and I would like to learn more but it's difficult since is not as intuitive as Windows 7.

I've been getting the following today when I try to check for updates:
Could not download all repository indexes
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Hi All the problem that you encounter is so easy to solve and it happens because of some users unmanaged action like playing with system things that he don't know what is it .
And the Way to solve it :
1- go to System=>Administration=>Software Sources
2-Uncheck the (Installable From CD-Rom/DVD) its like (Cdrom with Ubuntu 10.04 'Lucid Lynx) uncheck it remove it from using and chuck (apply) Source Code and all above it or Make your choices as like as this photo and make the download from : (Main Server)
Screenshot.png
3-Close the Software Sources and you can Use YOUR updates now try typing (Sudo apt-get update) and see thats the problem has been solved .
And thats all .
And remember to don't miss with system things you don't know what you will change.
And for further help ask me on my Email: TGAKO.SOT@Gmail.com

i did some configurations but i'm not sure.
i'm also unable to intall software from "ubuntu software center"

I think you should copy your important data and format your harddisk and reinstall ubuntu and install it correct maybe your problem happened while installing in ubuntu reinstall it and report .
Hello All,
When I want to try this command
"head -38 /etc/apt/sources.list | tail -1" in terminal, then show the message ##developers who want to ship their latest software.
Is it possible to solved (could not download all repository indexes) this problem?
Hi
No. The commanddoes not fix this errorCode:head -n38 /etc/apt/sources.list | tail -1What it does is print the line at line number 38 in the file /etc/apt/sources.list.could not download all repository indexes
If there is a problem on line 38 then the above command will display the line.
sarvan.rb's error was...
...and that is why that command was used; to see what the problem with line 38 actually was.E: Malformed line 38 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
I prefer to use sed to do the same thing.
Take a look at this.
sed -n '6p' /etc/apt/sources.list prints out the 6th line and so does head -n6 /etc/apt/sources.list | tail -1Code:matthew-S206:/home/matthew/BACKUP % cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list | head 1 # deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import 2 # deb cdrom:[Xubuntu 12.10 _Quantal Quetzal_ - Release amd64 (20121017.1)]/ saucy main multiverse restricted universe 3 4 # See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to 5 # newer versions of the distribution. 6 deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy main restricted 7 deb-src http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy main restricted 8 9 ## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the 10 ## distribution. matthew-S206:/home/matthew/BACKUP % sed -n '6p' /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy main restricted matthew-S206:/home/matthew/BACKUP % head -n6 /etc/apt/sources.list | tail -1 deb http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy main restricted matthew-S206:/home/matthew/BACKUP %
This is a really old thread though so Thread Closed.
Kind regards
