    one more thing ...
    it did not work right after restart...

    I went to System > Admin...> hardware drivers ..then deactivated driver then reactivated it and it started working!!!!:D

    ONE NOTE no s needed on build-essential and make install comand must be done as su

    "sudo su"

    live cd's are too slow and are damaged too easily ... A pen drive can fit in your pocket ... take it to school ... work...

    I definitly would go with An external harddrive or a usb install ( at least 8gb !)

    My wusb600n works fine in ubuntu 8.10 . (NOW)!!

    here is what i did :

    if you have the install disk for your wusb600n it has a win XP driver on it. ( .dll )

    from desktop go to System > Admin...
