You could also just use
gksudo nvidia-settings and save the config file
so you don't have to edit xorg.conf manually

does it use a xorg.conf? made by nvidia-settings perhaps?
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
if so you can try to change the resolution there..
you will have to use sudo nano (or any editor...
perhaps you could use some PLOP to get your usb booting, if I understand your question correctly, you have a problem getting the pc to boot from usb..
in that case read the plop instructions I...

erh., re-installing the OS just for videodrivers seems not the right way to go...

you can right click your word .docx files and use open with other application

you can use gparted to manage flags...right click the partition you want to edit and manage flags
